Recording / Performance Notes:
Depeche mode reconvened on a SoCal stage for the first time in nearly 4 years. The band played a tight set of five songs including 3 numbers from their 13th studio album, "Delta Machine". Dave danced about throughout the set as evidenced by the copious screams from the audience whenever he moved. I was in an ideal location prior to the band taking the stage. I had a coccoon of my friends around me. Due to my stature I was moved by the show's producers 3 feet to my left near an ardent clapper (attenuated) and a particularly vocal set of estrogen charged fans. All in all it's still a pretty solid pull. The omnis did pick up a pretty fair amount of the crowd. The performance was great but too short due to Tony Starks megalomaniacal need to shut down Hollywood Boulevard at 8PM for his own little event. This is the same real estate that this very band "owned" four years ago when thousands showed up to watch the band perform on Kimmel during SoTU. Nevertheless, I feel fortunate to be one of the lucky ones that had the opportunity to see them perform less than 20 feet away something I haven't done since "101" 25 years ago! Still "on the fence" whether or not it was worth the 10 hour wait in line. Dave sounded fantastic and his vocals come through very clearly in the recording in spite of the cheers and screams.
Of note:
Martin showcased his impressive collection of vintage guitars. He used no less than four very rare axes for the five songs they played. Martin may not have the chops of many of his rock contemporaries. Nevertheless, the simple Delta Blues riff for "Personal Jesus" is perhaps the most iconic guitar lick of the 90's. This ironically from a man known primarily as a synthesizer player.
Please support the band by purchasing their new album "Delta Machine" or by going to see them on tour
